Dehumidifier Owner FAQs

My dehumidifier is electrically dead, what can I do?

Please try the following steps:

  1. Use the dehumidifier in an alternative plug socket, preferably into the mains and not via an extension lead
  2. Please change the fuse in the plug
  3. Please remove the filter from the dehumidifier and clean both sides using the end of a vacuum cleaner
  4. Make sure there is enough space around the entire dehumidifier

If you continue to experience the issue after checking the steps above, please contact our customer service team so they can look into this further for you.

How can I get my laundry to dry faster when using laundry mode on my dehumidifier?

There are a number of factors that can affect how quickly clothes dry, and it’s worth noting that a dehumidifier’s role is to remove moisture from the air, rather than directly dry the clothes themselves. The moisture still needs to evaporate from the fabrics into the surrounding air.

Drying times can be influenced by:

  • Room temperature (warmer air helps moisture evaporate faster)
  • Airflow within the room
  • Other sources of humidity (e.g. cooking, showers, open windows)
  • Spacing between clothes (tightly packed clothes dry more slowly)
  • Thickness of fabrics (heavier items like towels or jeans take longer)

To improve drying times, we recommend:

  • Keeping the room as warm as possible
  • Ensuring good airflow (e.g. using a fan or positioning clothes with space between them)
  • Closing windows and doors to prevent additional moisture entering
My dehumidifier pump is not working, what should I do?

The pump is designed to activate only under specific conditions, rather than running continuously. It relies on signals from the bucket magnet, and unless these signals occur in the correct sequence, the pump will not continue to operate.

The process works as follows:

  • The bucket magnet tells the unit that the tank is full
  • The unit then runs for approximately 3 minutes to clear any remaining moisture from the coils (fan only, no compressor)
  • The red LED light will come on to indicate a full tank (unless the unit is in sleep mode)
  • The pump activates for around 30 seconds to remove the water
  • The pump will only activate again if the bucket magnet is triggered a second time

Check out this demonstration video for more information on the process.

My dehumidifier is mouldy, what can I do?

Aside from regular external cleaning, the most important factor is keeping the air entering the unit as clean as possible. As the dehumidifier continuously draws in air, any spores, dust, or particles present in the environment can gradually build up inside the machine over time.

Issues like this are typically environmental, rather than a fault with the unit itself. For this reason, reducing airborne particles and maintaining a clean surrounding environment can make a noticeable difference.

It’s also worth checking how the unit is performing in terms of humidity control. Have you noticed whether the dehumidifier is able to consistently maintain a humidity level of around 55%? If the unit is struggling to reach or hold this level, it may indicate that a larger unit with greater airflow would be better suited for the space, as increased air circulation can improve overall moisture control.

Mould can also grow when the internal components are not cleared properly before packing the unit away for a long period of time. If you plan to put your dehumidifier away for a season, the moisture from the coils needs to be cleared before this. To clear the machine of any moisture, put the dehumidifier in Fan/Air Purification Mode for at least 8 hours.

To help manage this moving forward, we would recommend:

  • Keeping the surrounding area as clean and dust-free as possible
  • Cleaning the filter regularly
  • Ensuring there is good airflow around the unit
Why are my humidity readings different since my dehumidifier has been repaired?

It’s completely normal to notice some inconsistencies in the readings after your dehumidifier has returned from our workshop. This happens because the unit needs some time to readjust to your home environment after being away for inspection and testing.

During this short adjustment period, variations in humidity readings and water collection rates are to be expected. The unit will gradually stabilise as it learns the typical temperature and humidity conditions of the room.

We recommend continuing to run the dehumidifier as normal, it should fully settle and provide consistent readings after a little time.

How often should I clean my dehumidifier?

To ensure your dehumidifier is always performing at its best, it’s important to regularly clean it. The filter must be cleaned a minimum of every two weeks (not doing so could invalidate the units’ warranty).

How do I clean my dehumidifier filter?

The dust filter is a life-long filter and therefore should not need to be replaced (other than for wear and tear reasons). When used regularly, the filter may become clogged with dust and dirt particles. The filter must be cleaned a minimum of every two weeks (not doing so could invalidate the units’ warranty).

Please follow the steps below:

  1. Remove the dust filter from the dehumidifier by sliding the filter case to the left, away from the dehumidifier. The dust filter is built into the filter case and cannot be removed – you may have  to remove the HEPA filter to access the dust filter.
  2. Clean the dust filter with the end of a hoover or soapy water no hotter than 40°C. Rinse and dry completely before inserting back into the dehumidifier.
How do I set my dehumidifier up on the Meaco app?
  1. Plug the dehumidifier into the mains and press the power button.
  2. The Wi-Fi indicator will flash - if there is no connection after 3 minutes the LED will turn off.  If you need to connect your Wi-Fi later, hold the timer button for 5 seconds and the Wi-Fi  indicator will start flashing again.
  3. In the Meaco app, press the + button in the top right hand corner and then ‘Add device’.
  4. The app will search for nearby devices and your air conditioner will appear, click ‘Add’.

How do the controls work on my dehumidifier?

Detailed instructions on how to use your air conditioner and the controls are available in the models instruction manual.

Is there anything I need to do when I first receive my dehumidifier?

When you first receive your dehumidifier, it is important you follow the steps below carefully:

  1. Check your dehumidifier and its box and packaging for any transport damage. In case of  damage, inform the sender immediately.
  2. Leave the dehumidifier to stand for six hours before turning it on. This will allow any refrigerant  that may have moved during transit to settle.
  3. Choose where you would like to locate your dehumidifier. This dehumidifier has been carefully designed allowing you to place the dehumidifier as close to a wall as you wish.
  4. If your dehumidifier has a HEPA filter - remove the bag around the HEPA filter and insert it in the back of your dehumidifier. This will enable air purification as well as dehumidification.
  5. Plug the dehumidifier into the mains and turn it on using the Power Button. When the dehumidifier is first switched on a number will appear on the display. Allow the dehumidifier to gauge an accurate reading of the humidity level in the environment it is situated in for the first 10 minutes.
How should I maintain my dehumidifier to make sure it's as efficient as possible?

Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. If the air conditioner is extremely dirty, use a slightly damp  cloth. Never spray the device with water.

The dust filter is a life-long filter and therefore should not need to be replaced (other than for wear and tear reasons). When used regularly, the filter may become clogged with dust and dirt particles. The filter must be cleaned a minimum of every two weeks (not doing so could invalidate the units’ warranty).

  2. Clean the dust filter with the end of a hoover or soapy water no hotter than 40°C. Rinse and dry completely before inserting back into the dehumidifier.
Where's the best place to put my dehumidifier?

Traditionally, you'll be recommended to place the dehumidifier centrally in the room, away from walls or obstructions. This is to allow at least 30cm gap between the wall and unit for airflow. With the MeacoDry Arete® Range, you can sit the dehumidifier flush against the wall and it will work just as efficiently.

You can place it in bedrooms, kitchens, or near problem areas where moisture builds up. For example, a bathroom, kitchen or laundry racks. We recommend keeping internal doors open and windows closed for the best results.

General Dehumidifier FAQs

Will a dehumidifier stop damp?

Yes, a dehumidifier helps reduce damp by removing excess moisture in the air. While it won't fix structural issues, it's one of the most preventative methods of protecting your home and health, and efficient ways to control humidity and prevent mould.

What are the advantages of having a dehumidifier?

Dehumidifiers improve air quality, prevent mould, reduce heating costs, and help dry clothes indoors. They're a simple solution to moisture problems that affect both your home and health.

When should you use a dehumidifier?

Use a dehumidifier whenever the air in your home is holding too much moisture. Signs to look out for include:

  • Condensation on windows, especially first thing in the morning
  • Black mould around window frames, in corners or behind furniture
  • A damp or musty smell
  • Clothes, bedding or towels that never quite feel dry
  • Peeling wallpaper or flaking paint

Indoor humidity is most comfortable and healthy between about 40% and 60%. Above that, mould and dust mites thrive.

Autumn and winter are when most homes need a dehumidifier. Windows stay shut, the heating goes on and laundry gets dried indoors, so moisture has nowhere to escape.

You might also use one:

  • To dry clothes indoors without a tumble dryer
  • After a leak or flood, to help dry out walls and floors
  • In cellars, garages or boats to protect stored items from damp
  • In summer, when muggy, humid air makes rooms feel sticky
  • To reduce dust mites and mould if you have allergies or asthma

Many dehumidifiers have a built-in humidistat. You set your target humidity, and the dehumidifier switches itself on and off to keep it there.

Do dehumidifiers use a lot of electricitiy?

Meaco dehumidifiers are engineered to be energy-efficient. You can calculate the average cost of running our dehumidifiers by using the running cost calculator on each of our product pages.

Do dehumidifiers dry laundry?

Yes! Many of our models feature Laundry Mode, which runs at full power for six hours before switching off automatically. It’s a cheaper, healthier alternative to tumble dryers.

How does a dehumidifier work?

A dehumidifier pulls in air, removes moisture using a cold coil or desiccant material, and releases drier air back into the room.

Meaco models use a compressor or desiccant system to extract water from the air. Moisture collects in a water tank or drains out via a hose, helping keep humidity levels in check.

What's the ideal humidity level for a home?

We recommend setting a target humidity level of 55% RH. You want to aim for a humidity level between 40–60% for comfort and mould prevention.

Maintaining this range helps prevent damp, mould, condensation. It can protect furniture and walls and can improve respiratory comfort, especially in homes with allergy or asthma concerns.

How do I know which size dehumidifier I need?

Dehumidifiers are sized by how much water they can remove in a day, measured in litres per day. The right size depends on the size of your home and how damp it is.

As a general guide:

  • Flats and small homes (1–2 bedrooms): 10–12 litres
  • Average family homes (3–4 bedrooms): 12–20 litres
  • Larger homes, or homes with serious damp or condensation: 20–25 litres

Choose a size up if:

  • You dry laundry indoors
  • You have visible mould or condensation on the windows every morning
  • The house is older, with solid walls or poor ventilation
  • You want the dehumidifier to work quickly and quietly at a lower fan speed
What's the difference between a compressor & a desiccant dehumidifier?

Desiccant dehumidifiers excel in colder environments, particularly below 10°C whilst compressor dehumidifiers perform best in warmer conditions, typically above 10°C, with optimal performance around 16°C+.

When it comes to drying laundry, both types perform well. However, desiccant models tend to have a higher airflow and produce warmer air, which can give them a slight advantage when drying clothes indoors.

In terms of portability, desiccant units are lighter and easier to carry, whereas compressor models are heavier (typically by around 6kg) but often come with castors for easier movement.

Regarding running costs, compressor dehumidifiers are generally more energy-efficient and cheaper to run. Desiccant models do use more energy, but they release this as warmth into the room, which can help reduce the need for heating—something many customers find beneficial.

Some compressor models also support HEPA filtration, allowing them to purify the air as well as remove moisture. Due to their internal design, desiccant models do not support HEPA filters.

In summary, if you’re looking for low running costs and versatility, a compressor dehumidifier is usually the better choice. If you need something that performs well in colder spaces or want the benefit of added warmth, a desiccant model may suit you better.

What's the difference between a HEPA and a charcoal filter?

These filters trap different things, which is why we offer both.

A HEPA filter traps particles including:

  • Dust and dust-mites
  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Mould spores

A H13 HEPA filter captures at least 99.95% of particles at the size that is hardest to catch. This makes it a good choice for allergy and asthma sufferers.

A charcoal (activated carbon) filter traps gases and smells. Activated carbon is very porous, so odours and gases stick to its surface as air passes through. It helps with:

  • Cooking smells
  • Pet odours
  • Smoke smell
  • VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from paint, cleaning products and new furniture

A HEPA filter can’t remove smells, and a charcoal filter can’t remove allergens.

Do dehumidifiers purify the air?

What a dehumidifier does: it removes excess moisture from the air. On its own, that doesn’t filter out pollen, pet dander or smoke. Most dehumidifiers have a washable dust filter, but its job is to protect the machine, not to clean the air you breathe.

How it still helps: mould and dust mites both thrive in damp air, and they’re two of the most common indoor allergy triggers. Keeping humidity between about 40% and 60% makes your home much less welcoming to both. It also stops musty smells from building up. So although a dehumidifier doesn’t trap allergens the way a purifier does, it reduces the conditions that create them.

Want both? Some dehumidifiers come with an extra filter, such as a HEPA or carbon filter, that cleans the air as it passes through. Our Arete One, Arete Two and Low Energy ranges are combined dehumidifiers and air purifiers. If allergies, pets or smoke are your main concern, an air purifier with a HEPA filter is the best choice.
