Landlords: you can now be sued for cold or damp homes under new laws

From 20 March 2019, the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act will make landlords more accountable for conditions in their properties. As a landlord you will have to make sure your properties meet certain standards at the beginning and throughout a tenancy. For the first time this will include problems caused by damp and mould.

Conflict with a tenant often arises when there is a problem with damp and mould, and who has responsibility for the problem. If the issue has been allowed to drag on, the tenants’ health and possessions could be affected and you could find yourself facing high costs for repairs and refurbishment.

With damp, the first action point is to check if there is a structural fault or a lack of ventilation.  In combination with this a solution will often be to buy a dehumidifier. This removes the excess moisture from the air created by ‘lifestyle issues’ (bathing, cooking, drying washing, breathing etc). It would also reduce any increase in the room’s relative humidity whilst the tenant waits for repairs to be undertaken. In many cases a dehumidifier alone will solve the problem.

What can landlords do about this?

Condensation on walls is a sign that a situation is bad but it does not necessarily mean that there is a structural issue. It could just be that the outside air is very cold, the walls have little or no insulation and the level of moisture inside is high. Improved wall insulation can help but the internal level of moisture stills needs to be reduced.

Meaco “ABC” – perfect for preventing damp in rented properties.

This new law will increase pressure on landlords to be proactive with regards to damp problems. Meaco’s Managing Director Chris Michael, an expert on humidity issues says:

“To prevent damp, mould and condensation becoming a conflict area use a dehumidifier on a regular basis. We recommend the Meaco “ABC” for rented properties.  They are our quietest ever dehumidifier which means they can discreetly get on with the job of removing up to 12 litres per day of moisture from the air without disturbing tenants. The “ABC” is competitively priced, economic on electricity bills, comes in a range of stylish colours and is light enough to be moved from room to room. They’re also very effective in helping dry washing which in rented properties is often a major contributor to damp conditions.”

Differences between the Meaco 12L Dehumidifiers

Differences between the Meaco 12L Dehumidifiers

We now have three quality 12L dehumidifiers in our range which is causing a bit of confusion for some customers and we get asked on a regular basis what the differences are between the three models.  They will all deal with your damp problems and help with condensation in a flat, apartment or a smaller house up to three bedrooms in size.  But which one is best for you?

Meaco “ABC” 12L

Each model has its own strong point so there are pros and cons to each model, depending on your requirements:

Best for Low Noise

Definitely the MeacoDry ABC 12L as at 35dB it is the quietest dehumidifier available.

Best for Low Energy Consumption

The Meaco 12L Low Energy dehumidifier has the lowest energy consumption of any 12L.

Best for Air Purification

Meaco 12L Low Energy

The Meaco 12L Low energy wins again because it is the only one to have a HEPA filter and it also has an air purification mode.

Best for reading the display

The Meaco 12L-AH wins here as it has a jumbo display making the numbers a lot easier to read.

Most manoeuvrable

Meaco 12L-AH

The Meaco 12L-AH is the only one of the three to have castors.

Best for design

A subjective one but many customers prefer the Meaco 12L-AH and they also comment that they like the way the numbers change colour depending on the humidity level.  The ABC range could also win here because it is available in five different colours.

Here’s a handy table that summarises and highlights the key differences:

At the end of the day which one is best for you depends on your needs but hopefully this short guide will help make the decision process easier for you.

Whichever Meaco dehumidifer you choose it will be covered by Meaco’s two year parts and labour warranty which can be extended to five years.

Our Partnership with The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation

Here at Meaco we believe in helping the world to become a better place, that’s why we feel it is only right to work closely with a charity. We continue to support the Guildford-based wildlife conservation charity, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF), and are delighted to have donated £22,000 during the last two years.

With every sale of our top of the range dehumidifier, the DD8L Zambezi, a donation is made to the DSWF to support the care of orphaned elephants in Zambia.

The Zambezi DD8L dehumidifier was launched in January 2016, the result of three years of intense research and development, incorporating several unique ideas originating from customers. It has a Which? “Best Buy” award and offers more functionality, with more control and options, than any other domestic dehumidifier on the market, and includes six “world firsts”. It was named after an orphaned elephant being cared for by the DSWF, as we wanted to add character to this special dehumidifier, plus help with elephant conservation, showing how business and charities can work together, raising awareness for conservation work amongst Meaco’s customers.

5 Star Meaco Reviews

There’s nothing we love more than making products that people truly use and love, but life is not always perfect and things do go wrong.  It is then that you get a measure of a company and Trust Pilot is one of those independent websites that people can use to see what others think about a company.  So it’s a great pleasure to see such positive five star reviews, exceptional comments and customer service feedback!

The internet is a place where people like to have a moan!  Something we all do and it is human nature to let off steam if you feel that you have received poor service or been hard done by.  So not surprisingly the internet is full of more negative reviews than positive reviews.  Trust Pilot in particular, because it is not linked to our website or automated in any way by ourselves is a place where you are most likely to see more negative reviews about ourselves.  This makes it especially pleasing that we have such a good rating on this sight with a 5 star rating at the time of writing (June 2018).

This reflects the hard work that the customer service team put in here at Meaco, all we do is treat our customers to the same standard that we would expect ourselves if we went into say John Lewis or Marks and spencers with an issue.  So congratulations to everyone in the team and thank you to all of our customers.

We hope that all of these positive messages inspires you to pick up the phone and talk to us rather than venting your frustration by having a rant online!
